Under my post that went viral, there were many interesting comments that vividly showed the true cross-section of Estonian society. A large portion of people have not actually clarified for themselves what the Estonian state is supposed to be, nor what its citizenship means and the responsibilities that come with it toward oneself, the state, and the nation.
I also received a lot of “heat” — I was called a traitor, a moron, and one relative even compared my views to treating statehood like a pair of black socks that can simply be changed when needed.
Fine. I know who I am.
But one very fundamental thing truly astonishes me. If you are such great critics of mine, such nationalists and patriots of the Republic of Estonia, then why do nearly 80% of our laws come from Brussels — just like they once came from Moscow? Why do we no longer have our own currency, the Estonian kroon, but instead the ruble has simply been replaced by the euro?
How have you, great patriots and lovers of the fatherland, allowed the state to go this far? And if you now realize that it is time for change in the Republic of Estonia, then why don’t you make those changes?! Why don’t you unite and act?!
Instead, you beat your chest and call yourselves patriots, while all of you are marked with a foreign flag. We won’t even start on state institutions — in some people’s view, the rainbow flag should apparently hold a more important place than the national flag, as has already happened repeatedly with the Ukrainian flag.
Why do you allow your country to be stripped bare? Why do you permit our land to be cut through by Rail Baltica, to be covered with wind farms, and why do you not stand up for your natural resources? Southern Estonia is being turned into a military training ground unfit for living.
I await your response — and so does the indigenous population!
